Dr. A. A. Isiaq, popularly known as Doctor Lanko Theorist, a senior lecturer in the Department of Political Science, University of Ilorin, has emphasized the need for a holistic and sustainable approach to tackling the menace of drug abuse in Kwara State and Nigeria at large.
Dr Lanko made this statement during his keynote presentation at the Second Kwara Stakeholders Summit held on March 20, 2025, at the Banquet Hall in Ilorin, Kwara State.
During his presentation, Dr. Isiaq analyzed the rising prevalence of drug abuse, particularly among young people, and pointed out that the issue extends beyond criminal behavior. He stressed that economic hardship, unemployment, peer pressure, mental health struggles, and societal influences are key drivers of drug addiction. According to him, without addressing these underlying factors, efforts to curb drug abuse will remain ineffective.
Highlighting the shortcomings of the punitive approach, Dr. Isiaq argued that merely arresting and imprisoning drug users would not provide a lasting solution. Instead, he advocated for preventive measures, rehabilitation programs, and reintegration strategies that would help young people recover and contribute positively to society.
However, he urged the government to invest in skill acquisition programs, job creation, and mental health services to support at-risk individuals.
As a scholar and the first African lecturer to venture into hip-hop music, Dr. Isiaq also examined the role of popular culture in influencing youth behavior.
He criticized the glorification of drug use in entertainment and social media, warning that young people often imitate what they see in movies, music videos, and online content. He called on musicians, influencers, and content creators to use their platforms responsibly by promoting messages that discourage drug abuse and encourage positive lifestyles.
Dr. Isiaq further stressed the need for stronger collaboration between government agencies, civil society organizations, and religious institutions in the fight against drug abuse. He proposed policy reforms that focus on education, awareness campaigns, and community-based interventions rather than punitive measures alone.
The summit, which brought together government officials, security agencies, religious leaders, educators, health professionals, and youth representatives, served as a platform for meaningful discussions on combating drug abuse in Kwara State. Dr. Isiaq’s thought-provoking presentation was widely applauded, with many stakeholders agreeing that a multi-sectoral approach is crucial to addressing the growing menace of substance abuse.
His lecture added to the broader discourse on the urgent need for evidence-based policies and community-driven solutions to curb drug abuse in the state and beyond.
Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq’s commitment to tackling drug abuse in Kwara State was reaffirmed at the event, where he was represented by his deputy chief of staff, Princess Olubukola Babalola. The special assistant to the governor on Drug Abuse Prevention and Control, Mukail Aileru, emphasized the administration’s dedication to addressing the growing menace of drug abuse, particularly the rising crisis of synthetic drugs.
Aileru highlighted that the lack of opportunities is a root cause of substance abuse and noted that the administration has invested heavily in youth empowerment initiatives.
