Niger Republic welcomes Nigerian Islamic scholars for peace talks

A delegation of Nigerian Islamic scholars led by Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau, the national leader of the Jama’atu Izalatu Bidi’ah wa Ikamatus Sunnah, the largest Salafi movement in Nigeria, has arrived in Niger Republic on Saturday to engage in diplomatic efforts to restore peace in the troubled country.

The delegation was received by Nigerien military officers and is expected to meet with their counterparts in Niger to discuss ways to resolve the crisis that has engulfed the nation.

The visit of the Nigerian clerics was approved by President Bola Tinubu, who met with leaders of various Islamic sects in Nigeria on Wednesday. The clerics, who are opposed to war with Niger as threatened by ECOWAS, said they are guided by their religious faith and the Quran to seek mediation first before resorting to war.

Sheikh Lau of Izalla group and Sheikh Abdurahman Ahmad of Ansar ud Deen, along with leaders of other sects, spoke to journalists after their meeting with President Tinubu.
