Court Lifts Suspension Of NNPP Presidential Candidate, Kwankwaso
A Kano State High Court has lifted the suspension of Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), from the party.
The court, presided over by Justice Usman Na’aana, on Tuesday granted an interim injunction restraining Boniface Aniebonam, Agbo Major, and 16 other respondents from parading themselves as national officers or leaders of the NNPP pending the hearing and determination of the motion of notice.
The judge also set aside “the purported suspension of Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as member of the applicant (NNPP)”.
The NNPP is a far-right political party in Nigeria, predominantly active in Kano State. It contested the 2023 Nigerian presidential election, but its standard-bearer and leader, Kwankwaso, came in 4th place, carrying only one state, its stronghold of Kano.
Kwankwaso was suspended from the party in February 2023 for alleged anti-party activities and gross misconduct. He was accused of undermining the party’s constitution and working against its interests.
He denied the allegations and challenged his suspension in court, claiming that it was illegal and unconstitutional. Also, he accused Aniebonam and Major of being impostors who had no authority to suspend him.
The court’s ruling is seen as a victory for Kwankwaso and his supporters, who have been campaigning for his reinstatement in the party. Kwankwaso has vowed to continue his quest for the presidency in 2027 under the NNPP platform.
