Deadly Crisis: FG To Evacuate Nigerians From Sudan By Road
The Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, has announced that the Nigerian government is set to evacuate its stranded citizens in Sudan by road due to a power tussle that has resulted in a crisis.
Many Nigerians, mostly students, are stranded in the country and calls have been made for their evacuation.
Other countries such as the US and European countries have already started evacuating their citizens, but with Nigeria’s situation being particularly challenging due to the high number of stranded citizens, evacuation has been delayed.
The Nigerian Embassy in Khartoum has also advised the stranded students to stay indoors for their safety until security clearance and guarantee from the Sudanese authorities are obtained.
Foreign Affairs Minister Geoffrey Onyeama stated: “Our situation is particularly challenging because the numbers are so great.
Some the countries like the US and European countries have started evacuating.
But what they’ve been evacuating were actually their diplomatic staff.
They haven’t been able to start evacuating their citizens there.
We can’t evacuate all our diplomatic staff at the moment because they need to also coordinate the evacuation of all those students that we’re talking about.”
The safety and well-being of the Nigerian students have been reported as a priority concern by the embassy.
