Victim of organ trafficking by Nigerian ex-senator pleads to stay in UK
A former Nigerian deputy senate president and his wife allegedly tricked a young man into travelling to the UK for the purpose of harvesting his organ.
The young man, David Nwamini, expressed his fear of returning to his home country in a statement that the court read out on Friday, May 5.
A doctor who acted as an intermediary for Ike Ekweremadu, 60, and his wife Beatrice, 56, deceived him. The doctor, Obinna Obeta, 51, told him that he had a job opportunity for him in the UK.
Nwamini said he had no idea that he was brought to the UK to be exploited for his body part. He said he valued his body and did not want to sell it.
He also said that he worried about his safety in Nigeria, as he believed that Ekweremadu and his associates might harm or arrest him. The victim said he wanted to stay in the UK and pursue his education and football career.
He refused to seek compensation from the convicted trio, saying that their money was tainted and unlucky.
The court heard that someone had approached Nwamini’s father in Nigeria and tried to persuade him to drop the case.
