A farmer named Segun Oni was given a life sentence by the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin, the state’s capital, for defiling a 13-year-old girl in the state’s Igbaja, Irepodun local government area.
In her ruling, Judge Adenike Akinpelu found Oni guilty of engaging in illicit sexual activity in violation of Section 321 of the Kwara State Child Rights Code.
Three years ago, a complaint was made alleging that Oni had forcefully abused the girl after luring her into the jungle with mango fruit.
In response to the court’s decision, Barr. Zowera Mustapha, a member of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), said the organization was working hard to ensure that society was free from all forms of indecency.
She urged parents to shield their daughters from inappropriate sexual advances and enticement and to report all instances of indecency to the relevant authorities.
Christie Abayomi-Oluwole, the chief executive officer of the Global Hope for Women and Children Foundation (GLOHWOC), also expressed her happiness with the verdict, calling it a win for everyone.
