FORMER FIRST LADY MICHELLE OBAMA’S MOTHER, MARIAN ROBINSON, DIES AT 86
On May 31, 2024, Marian Robinson, the mother of former First Lady Michelle Obama, passed away at the age of 86. The family confirmed the death in a statement, noting that she had passed away peacefully that morning.
Marian Robinson was a prominent figure in the White House during Barack Obama’s presidency, from 2009 to 2017. She moved to the White House to support her daughter and son-in-law, taking care of her granddaughters Malia and Sasha. She was affectionately known as the “first grandma.”
In a social media post, Michelle Obama remembered her mother as her “rock,” who was always there for her. Barack Obama also paid tribute to Marian Robinson, saying that she was the “extraordinary gift” to their family.
Marian Robinson was born in 1937 in Chicago, where she spent most of her life. She married Fraser Robinson and raised two children, Craig and Michelle. She worked as a secretary and later became a stay-at-home mom.
During her time at the White House, Marian Robinson maintained her independence and normalcy, doing her own laundry and taking the granddaughters to school. She also accompanied the Obama family on overseas trips, including a visit to China with her daughter and granddaughters.
Marian Robinson will be remembered for her grounded and supportive nature, as well as her dedication to her family. She was a beloved figure in the Obama family and will be deeply missed.
