Four students from Eleyele Secondary School in Ibadan have been ordered to remain in custody after an alleged raping of a female student with mental disability, according to a family court in Iyaganku.
According to News Agency, the state police command has accused the defendants, who are juveniles, of conspiracy and unlawful sexual activity.
Folake Ewe, the police prosecutor, revealed to the court during the court hearing that the students allegedly planned to conduct the crime together.
The police inspector claimed that between January and March 15, the youths violated the 16-year-old female student.
Ewe claimed that the offense violated both Section 34 of the 2006 Oyo State Child Rights Law and Section 516 of the Criminal Code.
It is assumed that the defendants entered a not-guilty plea to the accusations.
Due to a lack of jurisdiction, Chief Magistrate Sumbo Adetuyibi declined to accept their plea.
If the juvenile jail institution at Ijokodo, Ibadan, declines to accept them, Adetuyibi ordered that they be held in the Abolongo Correctional facility.
She postponed the discussion of the subject until May 11.
Concerns regarding incidents of sexual assault on students have grown in recent years.
Around 2,514 incidences of child abuse were documented in 2020 and 520 cases in 2021, according to recent data from the Child Protection Network of the Lagos State Ministry of Youths and Social Development.
