In order to discuss the withdrawal of the fuel subsidy, the federal government has called another meeting at the Presidential Villa with representatives of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress.
A first meeting on the subject that was scheduled for this Sunday (today) resulted in a standstill five days prior.
The president of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, said that the “petrol subsidy is gone” in his inaugural speech on May 29.
The president’s announcement immediately brought back long lines at gas stations and increased the price of the commodity at the pump across the entire nation.
Following the first meeting, the presidents of the National Labor Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Festus Osifo and Joe Ajaero, warned reporters at the state house that the government must reinstate the previous gasoline price or workers will begin a statewide strike on Wednesday.
In the meantime, the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) also declared that its members would be joining the strike in a document dated June 2 and signed by Dominic Igwebike, the union’s national secretary.
At the previous meeting, the federal government was represented by Dele Alake, who served as the delegation’s spokesperson, Mele Kyari, Group CEO of NNPCL, Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and Adams Oshiomhole, a former governor of the state of Edo.
