Fulani Herdsmen Attack Benue Communities, Kill Five, Injure Three
Suspected Fulani herdsmen invaded Ayilamo and Mahanga settlements in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State on Tuesday night, killing five people and injuring three others.
The attack, which occurred around 10:08 pm, was said to have targeted the residents of the two communities who were mostly farmers.
According to eyewitnesses, the armed herdsmen stormed the settlements and opened fire on the unsuspecting villagers, who were preparing to retire for the night.
The victims were identified as Ayev Jôgunô, Faiga Mwuese Apefan, Msendoo Tertese Vaachia, James Mhen Nyerga Iorliam and Orgbee Mnguerorga.
The injured persons were Mrs Mngohol Igbalumun Utile, Mr Vershima Usange Meeme and Mrs Terpase Nyerga.
They were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The attackers also burnt down some houses and crops before fleeing the scene.
The motive behind the attack is yet to be ascertained, but some residents alleged that it was part of a plot by the herdsmen to take over their lands and displace them.
They also accused the federal and state governments of being silent and unconcerned about their plight.
They called on the international community to intervene and stop the killings and displacement of innocent people by the herdsmen.
They also urged the security agencies to beef up their presence in the area and protect them from further attacks.
The police spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident and said the police had launched an investigation into the matter.
He said the police would do everything possible to arrest the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
He also appealed to the public to remain calm and cooperate with the police in their investigation.
