The Kwara State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to youth and grassroots sports development in the state.
The Governor, who was ably represented by Mallam Bolakale Mogaji, Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Sports Commission and patron of the Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON), made this known at the closing ceremony of the 16th edition of the YSFON Commissioner of Police Cup held in Ilorin on the 29th of August 2025.
Governor AbdulRazaq stressed the importance of inclusivity in sports, assuring that female athletes would continue to enjoy adequate support and recognition. He noted that sports remain a vital tool for youth engagement, empowerment, and talent discovery.
In his remarks, the Chairman of Kwara YSFON, Mr. Ademola Kiyesola, urged parents to encourage their children to participate actively in sporting activities. According to him, the Commissioner of Police Cup is designed to reduce youth restiveness and channel their energy into productive ventures.
The tournament featured three categories—Under-13 Boys, Under-17 Boys, and Under-17 Girls (POWA Cup)—with exciting displays of football talent across the teams.
In the Under-17 Boys’ final, Barca Kiddies FA edged Future Stars FA 4-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
In the Under-17 Girls’ (POWA Cup), Kwara Ladies United secured a 2-0 victory over Model Queens FA.
Unique FA triumphed in the Under-13 Boys’ final, defeating Future Stars FA 3-1 on penalties after a 1-1 stalemate.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adekimi Ojo, commended the organizers and participants, describing sports as a veritable tool for crime prevention and youth development.
Similarly, the Chairperson of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) in Kwara State, Mrs. Catherine Adekimi, emphasized the need to provide girls with positive role models through sports, inspiring them to make meaningful contributions to society.
The Commissioner of Police Cup, now in its 16th edition, continues to serve as one of Kwara’s most important grassroots football competitions, nurturing budding talents and promoting peace through sports.
