Ad hoc INEC staffs in Anambra State who worked during the general elections in 2023 have threatened to hold a peaceful protest if their allowances are not paid.
They expressed disappointment that no one had brought up their unpaid allowances after the election and threatened to hold a nonviolent protest in the state or file a complaint with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) if their demands were not met quickly.
This happened just two months after the expensive elections that cost billions of naira.
On the condition of anonymity, one of the impacted SPOs told newsmen in Awka that they had never anticipated that INEC would owe them money until that point.
According to him, the state’s SPOs have not yet received their allowances for the presidential and National Assembly elections, as well as the state assembly poll and rerun elections.
Another member of the state’s ad hoc staff, who also requested anonymity, appealed to Prof. Charles Soludo, the governor, to persuade INEC to give them their money.
“They wouldn’t pay attention to our problems. They failed to listen to us, much less express sympathy for our situation or offer suggestions for how to fix the issue, she added.
When reached, Dr. Kingley Agu, the state’s INEC spokesman, asked that our reporter come to his office, while Dr. Elizabeth Agwu, the REC, did not return her calls seeking comment on the situation.
