Kidnappers nabbed: Nigerian businessman rescued in Johannesburg
A Nigerian businessman who was kidnapped in Johannesburg on Wednesday has been rescued by the South African Police Service (SAPS) anti-kidnapping task team.
The 48-year-old victim, whose name has not been disclosed, was abducted in Fordsburg by a gang of seven suspects, who demanded a ransom for his release.
The SAPS anti-kidnapping task team, which specializes in tracking down kidnappers and rescuing victims, acted swiftly on the report and traced the suspects to a lodge in Ferndale, where they were arrested on Thursday.
National Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said the suspects were found in possession of six vehicles, which have been impounded for further investigation. She also said money that was allegedly withdrawn from the businessman’s bank account has been recovered.
Mathe praised the anti-kidnapping task team for their professionalism and efficiency, saying they have arrested at least 300 suspects in the last two years, where victims were kidnapped for ransom payments.
The suspects in this latest case will face charges related to the alleged kidnapping and any additional offenses uncovered during the investigation.
The Nigerian businessman, who is said to be in good health, has been reunited with his family and thanked the police for saving his life.
