Kwara State has again stamped its authority on the national stage by emerging overall champion in Scrabble at the 9th National Youth Games (NYG) held in Asaba, Delta State.
At the Multipurpose Hall of the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Kwara’s young wordsmiths dazzled with exceptional brilliance and resilience, clinching 2 Gold, 1 Silver, and 1 Bronze medals – a total of 4 medals – to finish as the undisputed leader on the Scrabble medal table.
Abia State and Anambra State followed in 2nd and 3rd place respectively, but it was Kwara that stole the spotlight with their consistent dominance across the rounds.
In a remarkable highlight of the tournament, one of Kwara’s medal-winning players was just 6 years old, making history as one of the youngest athletes to ever secure a podium finish in the National Youth Games. This feat has been described as “a symbol of Kwara’s commitment to nurturing talents from the cradle.”
Speaking after the victory, stakeholders described Kwara’s success as “a clear testament to the state’s investment in grassroots sports and intellectual development.” This triumph adds to Kwara’s growing reputation as a powerhouse in mind sports, complementing its exploits in other disciplines.
The Kwara State Sports Commission, under the leadership of Mallam Bola Mogaji, has consistently emphasized talent discovery and grooming, and this result further validates the effectiveness of the state’s sports development programmes.
