Kwara State Sports Commission has confirmed the approval of a 334-member contingent comprising 253 athletes, 30 coaches, 18 association secretaries, and 33 other officials for the 9th National Youth Games (NYG) scheduled to hold in Asaba, Delta State, from August 29 to September 6, 2025.
The officials include the Executive Chairman of the Commission, Mallam Bola Mogaji, board members, the Director of Sports, the Commission Secretary, heads of departments, the media team, medical personnel, drivers, cleaners, administrative officers, the camp commandant, the store officer, and a chaperon.
Speaking during the athletes’ farewell briefing on Monday, August 25, 2025, Mallam Mogaji charged the young sportsmen and women to “go for gold” and represent the state with pride. He reassured them of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s commitment to rewarding medalists, adding that the state government had provided all necessary support to ensure smooth participation in the Games.
“Our athletes are well prepared, and the government has played its role. The rest is in your hands. We believe you will make Kwara proud,” Mogaji said.
The Director of Sports, Mallam Ibrahim Bako, gave further insight into the state’s preparations, noting that Kwara would compete in 23 sporting events. He stressed that the athletes were carefully scouted from the grassroots, with strict compliance with age-screening guidelines to prevent the use of over-aged participants.
Bako expressed optimism that the team would surpass its performance in the last edition, especially with the assurance of rewards for outstanding athletes.
Also addressing the contingent, Mrs. Monisola Yemisi Makanjuola, a board member, urged the athletes to be disciplined, shun negative behavior, and uphold Kwara’s image throughout the competition.
Captain of Team Kwara, Bankole Abdulraheem, a student of Government Secondary School, Oja-Gboro, and a weightlifter, said the athletes were fully motivated and confident of excelling in Asaba.
The contingent is expected to depart Ilorin for Asaba today, Tuesday, August 26, 2025.
Other dignitaries present at the briefing included board members Mallam Abdullahi Yunusa Lade and Mrs. Monisola Yemisi Makanjuola, the Commission Secretary Aron Haruna Tsado, Head of Organising Mallam Hamidu Olowo; Mrs. Head of school sports, Afusat Abisoye; and several other senior officials of the Commission.
