Kwara’s Drug Prevention Model Goes Global: Governor’s Aide Mikail to Address Africa-Asia Summit in Kenya

Kwara State’s groundbreaking drug prevention and control initiatives will take center stage at the forthcoming Africa-Asia Drug Abuse Prevention Summit, scheduled for October 27–29, 2025, in Nairobi, Kenya.

The Special Assistant to the Kwara State Governor on Drug Abuse Prevention and Control, Hon. Aileru Olamilekan Mikail, has been officially invited to represent Nigeria at the summit, where he will present Kwara’s comprehensive model as a reference point for subnational governments across Africa and Asia.

The summit, themed around a “leave-no-one-behind” agenda, is a unique Global South platform bringing together policymakers, prevention and treatment practitioners, researchers, and civil society actors. It seeks to strengthen cross-continental partnerships that protect vulnerable groups—especially children, youth, and women—against the rising threats of drug abuse and its social consequences.

Mikail’s selection is a recognition of Kwara State’s leadership under Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, whose administration has pioneered sustainable, government-driven strategies on drug prevention and control. His presentation will spotlight best practices that have made Kwara a model for proactive and community-centered interventions in Nigeria.

A former Assistant Superintendent of Narcotics with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mikail has distinguished himself as a relentless advocate for drug-free communities. Over the years, he has built a strong record of policy innovation, grassroots advocacy, and regional collaborations, making him a respected voice both within and outside Nigeria.

According to the organizers, the summit will not only focus on drug prevention but will also explore the intersection of drug use with broader global challenges such as violence, mental health, technology, and even climate change—calling for contextual, evidence-based approaches.

The 2025 summit builds on the momentum of the 2023 “Children Matter: Right to a Drug-Free Childhood” conference held in Kerala, India, and is expected to produce a joint Afri-Asia Declaration and regional roadmap—positioning both continents as co-leaders in drug prevention and public health advocacy.

Officials believe Mikail’s contribution will not only showcase Kwara’s success story but also inspire long-term political commitment and international cooperation grounded in solidarity, innovation, and justice.

This milestone cements Kwara State’s growing global reputation as a pacesetter in social development and public health reforms, placing the state alongside world leaders in the collective fight for a drug-free future.
