Maid Abuse: Nursing Mother Escapes Jail Term, Pays N500,000 to Victim
ANAMBRA, Nigeria – A nursing mother who brutalised her maid in Amawbia, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, has been spared from going to jail after she agreed to pay N500,000 to the victim.
The incident, which happened on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, was confirmed by the former Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) Dr. Uche Nworah, who intervened in the matter.
Nworah said he and other concerned citizens met with the suspect, her husband, and the victim’s mother to resolve the issue amicably.
He said: “We decided that the suspect and her husband will sign an undertaking with us, that they won’t take in any underaged househelp. We also decided that instead of taking her to court, considering that she is breastfeeding, and that none of her family members is in support of her, but are grateful to us, that she should open a fixed deposit of N500,000 with the victim as the beneficiary, which she will access on turning 18. Failing to do this, we shall start her prosecution.”
He added that the suspect’s husband also agreed to sponsor the victim’s education up to the university level.
He said the agreement will be signed and the fixed deposit will be made by next week Saturday, after meeting with the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) to have it ratified.
He also said that they gave the victim’s mother N30,000 for her upkeep and handed over the victim to her.
The victim, whose name and age were not disclosed, was reportedly battered by the suspect for an undisclosed reason. She sustained injuries on her face and body.
The case has sparked outrage on social media, with many calling for justice for the victim and punishment for the suspect.
