UNILORIN president, Faji Tobiloba, The 35th President of the Students’ Union, University of Ilorin speak on the crisis surrounding the naira redesign and the circulation of new naira notes has a cascading effect on all Nigerians, including students of the University of Ilorin, and it’s quite unfortunate.

This development has created heightened confusion amongst students, and by extension, the citizenry, as banks, fuel stations, traders, transport operators -korope drivers, have refused to accept the old currencies. It’s quite appalling and distasteful.
Evidently, the refusal of the CBN to extend the February 10 deadline has caused more havoc that good as most Students/citizens are stranded, now more than ever.
As a proactive Union, we’ve initiated talks with several agencies towards implementing a cashless community and in ensuring that our students are conveyed to and fro campus, smoothly. We’re in talks with Opay, Unilorin Microfinance Bank towards implementing a scan and pay system.
Also, we’re considering the process of digitizing the transport payments platform by opting for smart cards and card readers. The process is in top gear and if successful, this will complement existing payment platforms using smart cards.
He added, “We understand the inconvenience these issues have caused and the tension on students, hence, we appeal to the subconscious of all students of the ‘Better by Far’ varsity to exercise patience while we work towards implementing alternatives.
As much as it’s a national crisis, I enjoin Unilorites to maintain civility and orderliness all through. Of course, it’s a phase, and as always, we’ll pull through. We are in this together.
