New Soun of Ogbomosoland Emerges
The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has approved the appointment of Prince Afolabi Ghandi Olaoye as the new Soun of Ogbomosoland. The announcement was made in a press release issued by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Olusegun Olayiwola, on Saturday, September 2, 2023.
According to the press release, the selection of Prince Olaoye followed the long-drawn processes specified under the law. The Governor congratulated the new Soun-elect on his ascension to the throne of his forebears and urged him to facilitate harmony, understanding and tolerance amongst his people.
Prince Olaoye is a former pastor and a graduate of English and Industrial and Labour Relations. He is also a descendant of the first Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Toyeje Akanni. He was chosen by the kingmakers from among 21 candidates who contested for the vacant stool.
The stool of Soun became vacant following the demise of Oba Oladunni Oyewumi Ajagungbade III on August 24, 2020, after reigning for 47 years. The late monarch was buried on October 29, 2020, amid tributes and eulogies from prominent personalities and dignitaries across the country.
The ancient city of Ogbomoso is one of the largest and most populous towns in Oyo State. It is known for its rich cultural heritage and historical significance. It is also home to the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), one of the leading universities in Nigeria.
The people of Ogbomoso have expressed their joy and excitement over the emergence of the new Soun. They have also prayed for his successful reign and a blessing to the land. KAABIYESI ooo!
