The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has officially set Saturday, September 30, as the kickoff date for the 2023/24 season.
In a letter penned by Davidson Owumi, the Chief Operating Officer of NPFL, dated Monday, September 25, it was revealed that the upcoming season promises substantial rewards for participating clubs.
One of the most significant announcements is the surge in the championship prize money.
This season’s champions will take home an impressive ₦150 million, marking a substantial 50% increase from the previous season’s prize money.
This boost underscores the league’s commitment to recognizing and rewarding excellence on the football field.
Additionally, the NPFL is extending a helping hand to participating clubs by providing start-off grants. A total of ₦200 million will be distributed among the 20 clubs, with each receiving ₦10 million.
These grants are intended to facilitate smooth operations as the season gets underway.
Mr. Owumi emphasized the importance of swift action from the clubs, urging them to provide their account details promptly for the grant transfers, as the season’s start date is just around the corner.
Addressing concerns related to marketing and partnerships, the letter reassured the clubs that the NPFL Board would always prioritize decisions and contracts that serve the best interests of the league and its clubs.
Talks are currently ongoing with a potential ten-year broadcast rights partner, a development that holds the promise of expanding the league’s economic horizons.
Davidson Owumi concluded with optimism, stating, “We remain very hopeful that they or other prospective partners will show up since talks are still ongoing. Any success achieved will enlarge the economic frontiers of the league and, by extension, the clubs as we progress.” Football enthusiasts can’t wait for the NPFL’s exciting new season to kick off on September 30, 2023.
