Obi And Atiku Lost Because Of Over Confidence – Buhari
President Buhari says over-confidence made Atiku, Peter Obi and others lose the 2023 elections
Buhari has on 27th April, attributed the defeat of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, among other opposition figures, to their over-confidence in the 2023 general elections.
He did not mention them by name, but he said that they were confident of winning with the support of some foreign allies, while the All Progressives Congress (APC) was cautious and diligent in retaining power.
Atiku, who ran for President under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), came second, while Obi of Labour Party came third.
The President made these remarks at his residence in the State House, Abuja, where he hosted the Progressive Governors Forum led by their Chairman, Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State.
He said: “They were so sure of winning that they told their foreign backers that they would defeat the APC.
Our Party was careful and worked hard and won. Now, their over-confidence is causing them more trouble than anything else.
They are struggling to explain to those who backed them from abroad why they could not beat us.
They lost because of over-confidence, complacency and bad tactics. This has created more problems for them.
Why couldn’t they remove us?” Responding to a point raised by Governor Bagudu, President Buhari said: “One of the reasons I congratulate Asiwaju (Bola Tinubu) on winning is because the opposition got foreign support and false hope and created the impression that they would win, that they would defeat us. How wrong they were?” he asked.
President Buhari advised the Progressive Governors to work together and openly discuss issues among themselves.
“Try and keep solving problems. Be brave to talk about them openly among yourselves.
This is the best way to survive politically in Nigeria,” he said, urging that “you (Governors) have a program to meet regularly and to discuss issues and how to maintain the Party nationwide.”
On his retirement plan, Buhari said he planned to stay in Daura for six months before relocating to Kaduna.
He thanked Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State for the infrastructure he had provided that would make his retirement life and that of the people of the state much better.
He also appreciated Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State for doing the same.
