The crowning of Britain’s King Charles III and Queen Camilla took place on Saturday, May 6, at Westminster Abbey in a splendid and solemn ceremony.
The coronation, which symbolized the unity of the monarchy, church and state, was witnessed by leaders from around the world, and thousands of people flocked to London to see the spectacle. It was the first coronation in Britain in seven decades.
Charles and Camilla, who both received their crowns during the two-hour service, rode back to Buckingham Palace in the Gold State Coach, which has been used for every coronation since 1831. They later greeted the public from the palace balcony with other royals.
On Sunday, the nation will celebrate with thousands of events as part of the “Coronation Big Lunch,” while Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Take That will perform at the “Coronation Concert” at Windsor Castle in the evening.
Charles became King immediately after his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, passed away at 96 in September. She was the longest-serving monarch in British history.
