Police PRO Claims Most Kidnappings You Read Online Are Staged And Fake, Sparks Outrage Online
A heated debate erupted on social media after the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, claimed that most of the kidnapping cases reported online were either staged or faked.
The controversy started when a concerned citizen, Samuel N, posted a series of tweets questioning why the police always gave excuses after abductions had taken place.
He wrote, “Excuses! Excuses!! Excuses!!! Kidnapping in Lagos….’oh no, its because of the water ways that leads to Port Harcourt and Bayelsa’. Okay Sir, what of the ones in Ekiti, ‘oh…forget that one, it’s because of the forest in Ekiti’… Me: I’m tired. I give up!!”
To his surprise, he received a reply from the Force PRO, who defended the police’s response to the security challenges.
He tweeted, “You don’t need to give up. That is the reality. Most of the kidnapping cases we read online are not real. They are either staged and faked. We analyse security situations based on empirical facts and figures. We will have another forum or many other organized fora to discuss these concepts of kidnapping, abduction, one change, armed robbery, organised crimes, and arranged assassination. These are different concepts or crimes that we need to understand, and the psychology of the perpetrators. No sentiment, but realities. Open your mind to discussions and explanations of experts and security operatives for better understanding. Thanks.”
His response sparked a backlash from many users, who accused him of being insensitive, ignorant, and dismissive of the plight of the victims and their families.
Some users also challenged him to provide evidence for his claims, and questioned his credibility and competence as the Force PRO.
Others expressed their frustration and disappointment with the state of security in the country, and called for urgent reforms and actions to curb the menace of kidnapping and other crimes.
