President-elect Tinubu hails Osimhen as Nigeria’s new King of Serie A
TweetNigeria’s president-elect Bola Tinubu has congratulated Victor Osimhen for his stunning performance in Napoli’s 4-0 victory over Sampdoria on Saturday. The Nigerian striker scored a hat-trick and assisted another goal in the Serie A match, earning him praise from fans and pundits alike.
Tinubu, who is set to replace Muhammadu Buhari in May 2023, took to his Twitter page to celebrate Osimhen’s achievements, calling him the new King of Serie A and the pride of Nigeria.
“I think we can all agree that there was another coronation in Italy where our son, Victor Osimhen, claimed the crown as the new King of Serie A! The real deal, or idán gangan as younger folks may describe him; Victor has continued the fine tradition of Nigeria’s footballing excellence on the global stage. We are all proud of him and wish him well in what is already a remarkable career,” Tinubu wrote.
Osimhen, 22, has been in sensational form this season, leading the Serie A scoring charts with 15 goals in 16games. He became the first Nigerian to score a hat-trick in Italy’s top flight since Yakubu Aiyegbeni in 2007.
Osimhen has followed in the footsteps of some of Nigeria’s greatest footballers, who have made their mark on the global stage.
From Rashidi Yekini to Nwankwo Kanu, from Jay-Jay Okocha to Obafemi Martins, Osimhen is the latest star to carry the flag of the Super Eagles with pride and excellence.
Osimhen has already surpassed his tally of 10 goals in his debut season with Napoli, and he shows no signs of slowing down.
He is a key player for Luciano Spalletti’s side, who are currently second in Serie A, four points behind leaders Inter Milan. He is also a regular for Nigeria’s national team, having scored seven goals in 16 appearances.
Tinubu, 70, is a former governor of Lagos State and senator for Lagos West. He is widely credited with reshaping Nigeria’s commercial hub Lagos and played a key role in the formation of the All Progressives Congress in 2013.
He won Nigeria’s most competitive election since the end of military rule in 1999 by defeating a divided opposition party. And then a youth-backed third-party candidate.
