Trucks Carrying Humans, Animals Together Will Be Impounded, FRSC Warns
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has ordered the impoundment of any vehicle that is found to be carrying both humans and animals, following a deadly crash that claimed the lives of 18 people and injured 27 others on the Abuja-Kaduna Highway on Sunday.
The crash involved an articulated vehicle that was overloaded with goods and passengers, and was travelling at a high speed. The driver lost control of the vehicle and plunged into a ditch on the highway around 5:20am.
The Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Mr Dauda Biu, said that the crash was avoidable and blamed the reckless behaviour of drivers who flout simple traffic rules. He said that the FRSC would work with other agencies to enforce the impoundment of vehicles that violate the safety standards.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by the Deputy Corps Marshal, Mr Bisi Kazeem, Biu said: “To reverse the trend, all Sector Commanders are to set up joint task forces to impound trailers and trucks carrying humans and animals. The courts should prosecute the drivers.”
Kazeem added that Biu instructed sector commanders to set up joint task forces in collaboration with sister agencies such as the police, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Army, and Vehicle Inspection Officers, among others, to conduct special operations to end the practice.
He said that the impoundment of vehicles carrying humans and animals was in line with the FRSC’s mandate to ensure the safety of lives and property on the roads.
