In a recent health crisis that has gripped Lagos State, an unregistered tiger nut drink has emerged as the primary culprit behind the alarming cholera outbreak. The impact of this outbreak has reverberated across several local government areas, including Lagos Island, Kosofe, and Eti-Osa.
As of June 21, Lagos has reported 24 fatalities and 35 confirmed cholera cases, with Eti-Osa identified as the epicentre of the outbreak in Nigeria’s commercial capital. The sudden surge in cases prompted swift action from health authorities, who embarked on a thorough investigation.
Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health, shed light on the situation. She explained that when suspected cholera cases spiked in Eti-Osa LGA, officials conducted a direct assessment. Their findings pointed to a common factor: the consumption of an unregistered tiger nut drink.
The drink, which lacked approval from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), raised serious concerns. Authorities traced its origin, but only empty bottles were found—rendering testing impossible. The phone number on the bottle proved untraceable.
Cholera, a water-borne disease, necessitated stool and water samples for testing. The specific strain identified was Vibrio cholera subtype 01, known for its infectious and aggressive nature. Hospitals in Lagos Island, Eti-Osa, and Kosofe treated the highest number of cases.
Dr. Ogunyemi emphasized the importance of hygiene and purchasing consumables registered with government agencies. As the investigation continues, Lagos residents are urged to remain vigilant and prioritize their health.
