Women’s W’Cup: James Banned Two Games After Stamp On Nigerian Player
A two-game suspension has been imposed on England’s striker, Lauren James, 21, for a foul on Nigeria’s defender, Michelle Alozie, in the Women’s World Cup last 16 clash.
James will miss the rest of the tournament unless England reaches the final, Fifa announced.
Nigeria dominated the game but failed to score from their 20 shots and lost to England in a penalty shootout after James was sent off in the 87th minute for stamping on Alozie.
James later expressed her regret for the incident on social media and said she had “love and respect” for Alozie. She also said she would “learn from the experience”.
Alozie, who showed great sportsmanship, tweeted her respect for James on Tuesday.
She wrote, “Abeg, rest. we are playing on the world’s stage. This game is one of passion, insurmountable emotions, and moments. all respect for Lauren James.”
