Viral Video Exposes Appalling Conditions In Nigerian Prison
A viral video of the living conditions at a Nigerian Correctional facility has sparked outrage and condemnation from human rights activists and the public.
The video, which was posted on social media, shows the deplorable state of the prison, where inmates are subjected to overcrowding, poor sanitation, malnutrition, and disease.
The video reveals that the food served to the prisoners is watery and insufficient and that over a hundred people sleep in one room, with no proper bedding or ventilation. The inmates also complain that they do not have access to bathing facilities and that they have to urinate in the same room where they sleep. Many of them are suffering from various illnesses due to the lack of medical care and hygiene.
The video has drawn attention to the long-standing problem of prison conditions in Nigeria, which have been described as “appalling” by Amnesty International. According to the human rights organization, Nigeria’s prisons are in dire need of reforms to improve the welfare and rehabilitation of inmates.
According to a report by Pristinegist, some of the major problems of Nigerian prisons include overpopulation, poor medical facilities, poor nutrition and feeding, sexual immorality and abuse, and drug dependence. The report also suggests some possible solutions, such as reducing pre-trial detention, providing adequate health care and education, ensuring accountability and transparency, and respecting the rights and dignity of prisoners.
The Nigerian government has been urged to take urgent action to address the situation and ensure that the prisoners are treated humanely and fairly. The Nigerian Correctional Service Act of 2019, which replaced the Prisons Act of 1972, was supposed to bring about positive changes in the management and administration of prisons in Nigeria. However, the implementation of the act has been slow and ineffective, leaving many inmates in limbo and despair.
