What was presented as a mass defection of APC members to the PDP in Alanamu Ward, Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State at the weekend has been dismissed as a non-event and mere homecoming of former PDP members.
Findings show that the said defectors are long-time loyalists of Senator Saliu Mustapha who were originally PDP members and only followed him into the APC. Their return to the PDP alongside their principal is therefore not a fresh defection from the ruling APC, but a return to their former party.
Party stakeholders described the rally at the PDP Alanamu Ward secretariat as political window-dressing designed to deceive the public and create a false impression of momentum.
“This is not news worthy. They are not APC members defecting, they are PDP members going back to their house. Much like their overrated principal, Saliu Mustapha, who has severally been alleged by party faithful to be a mole in the APC, they were never fully with the APC in spirit,” a chieftain of the APC in Ilorin West said.
It would be recalled that Senator Mustapha recently resigned from the APC to join the PDP after losing the APC governorship primary to the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Danladi-Salihu.
Political observers in the state noted that the PDP, desperate to stay relevant ahead of 2027, has resorted to rebranding returnees as new converts in what they described as an “anything goes” strategy to mislead Kwarans.
Despite the media hype, APC leaders in Alanamu Ward maintain that the ruling party remains intact, united and focused on consolidating on the achievements of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, with the Danladi-Salihu/Adato joint ticket enjoying massive grassroots acceptance across the state.
