Iroko of Ibadanland Falls: Oba Lekan Balogun Joins Ancestors at 81
In a solemn declaration that has cast a shadow over Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II, the revered 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland, has passed away at the age of 81. The monarch’s two-year reign, marked by wisdom and progress, came to an end on Thursday evening at the University College Hospital, Ibadan.
Governor Seyi Makinde, who confirmed the monarch’s passing in a heartfelt statement, likened Oba Balogun to a towering Iroko tree, a symbol of strength and endurance in Yoruba culture. “A mighty Iroko has fallen; Oba Balogun has joined the ancestors,” he lamented.
Oba Balogun’s ascension to the throne on March 11, 2022, following the passing of Oba Saliu Adetunji, was a moment of unity and celebration for the people of Ibadanland. His Imperial Majesty was a cosmopolitan and well-experienced leader whose contributions have left indelible marks on the sands of history.
The governor extended his deepest condolences to the immediate family of Oba Balogun, the Olubadan-in-Council, the state Traditional Council, and the people of Ibadanland. He prayed for the repose of the late monarch’s soul and acknowledged the profound void his passing has left in the rich tapestry of Ibadan’s history and heritage.
Born on October 18, 1942, Oba Balogun’s life was one of service and dedication to his people. Just days before his passing, he expressed gratitude for the privilege of serving two years on the throne and for the unwavering support of his advisory council. His second anniversary coincided with the commencement of this year’s Ramadan fast, a period he hoped would be marked by prayers for the nation and expressions of love among the faithful.
