Tension In: Police Intervene as Soldiers and Traders Engage In A Fight In Melee Market
In a shocking turn of events, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command has swiftly responded to a violent outbreak at Banex, a prominent electronics and telecommunications market in Abuja. The clash, which erupted on Saturday between soldiers and local traders, has led to the deployment of intelligence officers to contain the situation.
A video that has since gone viral depicts a chaotic scene where civilians are seen clashing with military personnel. The footage, which has captured the attention of the public, shows the traders overpowering the soldiers during the altercation.
Efforts to reach the Defence Headquarters and Onyema Nwachukwu, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Army, have been unsuccessful.
The root of the conflict appears to be a dispute over a mobile phone sale. A trader, known only as Abdul, described the scene: “There’s a problem at Banex now. Some soldiers came to complain about a phone, and during an argument with the traders, a fight ensued.”
In response to the incident, SP Josephine Adeh, the spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, confirmed that Commissioner of Police Benett Igweh has taken action. “The CP has deployed the Intelligence Response Team to the scene,” stated Adeh, indicating the seriousness with which the authorities are treating the matter.
The situation remains tense, and the eyes of the nation are now on Banex, awaiting further developments.
