6th of October 2025, the Kwara State Government has dismissed reports circulating on social media that nine local government areas in the state are currently under siege by bandits, describing the claim as “totally false and malicious.”
In a statement issued on Monday by the Commissioner for Communications, Bolanle Olukoju, the government clarified that no local government area in Kwara is under bandit control, adding that the claims were being spread by opposition elements seeking to create fear and panic among residents.
“We wish to alert the public to some reckless claims that nine local government areas of Kwara State are under siege by bandits. This is totally false. No local government area is under siege in the state,” Olukoju stated.
She explained that while there have been isolated security challenges in some areas, these incidents do not justify the “wicked escalation and fake news” being promoted online.
“We have reasonable grounds to suspect that these elements are the online promoters and equivalent of bandits as they help to instill fear in the populace through fake news such as the unfounded claim of nine LGAs being under siege and movement of gunmen in parts of Asa LGA,” she added.
The Commissioner also expressed disappointment that former presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi reportedly shared the false claim on his social media platforms, urging him to take down the post.
“We regretfully observe that Mr. Peter Obi has lent his social media handles to spreading such fake news. This is not expected from him as a statesman. We request Mr. Peter Obi to bring down the post as it is totally false and inappropriate,” she said.
Olukoju further appealed to the public to refrain from sharing unverified information, warning that such actions could cause unnecessary panic and psychological distress among citizens.
She emphasized that spreading fake news only complicates the work of security agencies, who are already working tirelessly to maintain peace and order in the state.
“This irresponsible behaviour is making things harder for the security forces who already have enough on their plates,” she noted.
The government reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property across the state, assuring residents that security agencies remain on alert and fully in control of the situation.
