Ghanaian media personality, Kwadwo Sheldon, revealed his deep sorrow over how Nigerian songs topping the Apple music charts in Ghana.
Sheldon, who spoke live on his show known as ‘Kwadwo studios’ to his large audience, complained bitterly while expressing his displeasure over Nigerian songs topping the music charts in his home country.
In his words, “…Now! The top ten conversation on social media about the top ten songs on Apple Music Gh all being Nigerian songs. From number one to number ten, if we’re doing top tenner, that’s Nigerian songs all through and through and all over.”
He further said, “Even from number one to sixteen. If you do top five, Nigerians. If you do top ten, Nigerians. If you do top fifteen, Nigerians. If you do top sixteen, all are occupied by Nigerians…” while showing displeasure by shaking his head severely.”
The comment prompted some angry Nigerians on social media to come for his head by posting.
” I wonder why Ghana compare themselves to Nigeria 🇳🇬 it’s insulting, the economy of Ghana is like half that of Lagos so why compare yourself to the whole Nigeria,” said @eko_bitcoin_sam
Another person on social media with the handle @pagebybuka also replied, “That’s wonderful to point that out but do you agree that wouldn’t be a conversation if the top 10 was US-based music? Africans only see the problem when it’s within Africa. It is a huddle we need to cross. Nigeria music is not only doing well on the African continent, here in Europe, but it’s also topping the charts as well.
“So people shouldn’t stop enjoying music simply cuz it comes from one country or the other. Apple music is indeed the reflection of the amount of listens cuz they use regional algorithm to determine this.
“Nigeria music is a phenomenon that is taking the world by storm now and I am happy to see it’s not just the rest of the world but who are appreciating it but also Africans.
A popular skit maker, known as Oluwadolarz (@oluwadolarz) commented, “If mumcy talk na them go say na beef”.
This forced Sheldon to type under the comment section saying, “Conversation was premised on what actually engineered some of the takeovers. I know Ghanaian artistes equally create good music but if top 16 songs in Ghana on Apple Music are dominated by Naija music, we should be worried.
However, he concluded, People have also argued that Apple Music isn’t a reflection of music consumption in Ghana.. we will keep spearheading the conversation tho. Thanks for sharing and I love naija music”.
