Drake reveals his Nigerian roots on Instagram
The Canadian rapper and singer Drake has shared his ancestry DNA test results on his Instagram page, showing that he has a significant percentage of Nigerian heritage.
The test, which he took from AncestryDNA, a service that uses microarray-based autosomal DNA testing to survey a person’s entire genome at over 700,000 locations, revealed that he is 30% Nigerian, 28% Camerounian, Congolese and Western Bantu, 11% Ivorian and Ghanaian, 8% English and Northwestern European, 7% Scottish, 5% Malian, 4% Beninese and Togolese, and 3% Germanic European.
Drake, whose real name is Aubrey Drake Graham, posted a screenshot of his test results on his Instagram account [@champagnepapi](#4^), which has over 144 million followers.
He captioned the post with “Nigeria 30%” and a Nigerian flag emoji, followed by a list of the other regions he is descended from.
He also added a hashtag #drake, which has over 14 million posts on Instagram.
The post has received over 10 million likes and thousands of comments from fans and celebrities, many of whom expressed their surprise and admiration for Drake’s diverse background.
Some also joked that he should change his stage name to “Drizzy Oluwa” or “Drake Eze”, which are Nigerian honorifics. Others suggested that he should collaborate with Nigerian artists or visit the country to explore his roots.
Drake is not the first celebrity to take an ancestry DNA test and share the results online.
Other stars who have done so include Oprah Winfrey, Barack Obama, Tom Hanks, Emma Watson, and Meghan Markle.
