The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) issued a warning on Monday, stating that its members would initiate a nationwide strike without prior notice to the Federal Government if there’s a fuel price hike before ongoing negotiations conclude and relief measures are implemented.
During the African Alliance of Trade Unions meeting in Abuja, NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero emphasized the need for the government to rectify detrimental economic policies that have diminished wages.
Addressing the potential fuel price increase, Ajaero expressed concern that labor wouldn’t give a strike notice if the adverse consequences of recent fuel price hikes remain unaddressed.
Furthermore, Ajaero highlighted the Ministry of Labour’s responsibilities, urging the Nigerian police to refrain from interfering in labor matters and demanding an apology from the Inspector General of Police for attempting to arrest the National Union of Road Transport Workers’ president.
He stressed the importance of preserving the Ministry of Labour’s functions to prevent its extinction.
