South Korea came from behind to beat Portugal in their final game in Group H, making Uruguay’s 2-0 win over Ghana irrelevant.
Uruguay was knocked out of the World Cup on goals scored after South Korea came from behind to beat Portugal.
A brace from Giorgian De Arrascaeta secured Uruguay a 2-0 win against Ghana at the Al Janoub Stadium, but South Korea’s come-from-behind 2-1 victory left both teams tied on four points, and with the same goal difference.
However, crucially South Korea scored four goals and Uruguay just two.
Suarez, whose infamous handball cost Ghana in the 2010 World Cup, cut a disconsolate figure as his side crashed out.
The final whistle saw several livid Uruguay players approach referee Daniel Siebert as he headed down the tunnel. The South Americans were livid at what they had seen as a series of decisions going against them during the game.
Despite beating Ghana, Luis Suarez was in tears as Uruguay crashed out of the World Cup.
The Sky Blue were in pole position to qualify for the knockout stages as soon as they took the lead against Ghana, with Portugal beating South Korea in the other group game. Giorgian de Arrascaeta’s brace saw Uruguay fly into a two-goal advantage at half-time, and they were cruising into the last 16.
However, South Korea mounted a remarkable comeback to turn the game on its head, with Kim Young-Gwon and Hwang Hee-chan scoring to put them into second place in the group on goals scored.
The Wolves forward netted in the 92nd minute, meaning Uruguay had little time to score another to book their place in the knockout rounds.
