Ilorin, March 3, 2025 – Former Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Dr. Ishaq Modibbo Kawu, has called for higher ethical standards in journalism, criticizing the commercialization of media awards and advocating for a more credible and professional press.
Dr. Kawu made these remarks during an Iftar gathering with members of the Association of Kwara Online Media Practitioners (ASKOMP) at his GRA residence in Ilorin. Addressing key issues in the media landscape, he condemned the growing trend of media houses offering awards to politicians, describing it as a practice that undermines the integrity of journalism.
Recalling his tenure as Editor at Daily Trust Newspaper, he emphasized that he never entertained such an idea, as it compromises media credibility. Instead, he noted that Daily Trust focused on recognizing unsung heroes who made a real difference in society, such as a doctor in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, who dedicated his life to helping victims of sexual violence.
Beyond critiquing the current media culture, Dr. Kawu urged journalists to uphold ethical reporting, teamwork, and mutual respect in their profession. He cautioned against unnecessary divisions among media practitioners, emphasizing that unity would enhance their collective impact.
Speaking on the regulation of social media, he opposed any attempt to impose restrictions, arguing that such measures contradict the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution. He advocated for the protection of freedom of expression while encouraging ethical journalism in the digital space.
Dr. Kawu further highlighted the need for continuous training and professional development, especially in the evolving digital media landscape. He stressed that journalists must consistently upgrade their skills to maintain credibility, navigate technological advancements, and adapt to the fast-changing nature of modern media.
In response, ASKOMP Chairman, Mr. Salihu Shola Taofeeq, expressed appreciation for Dr. Kawu’s longstanding contributions to journalism. He lauded his insights and commitment to ethical journalism, offering prayers for his continued strength and well-being.
