…Urges Defensive Fixes, Goalkeeping Improvement
The Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Sports Commission, Mallam Bolakale Adisa Mogaji, has expressed optimism about Nigeria’s chances at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, stating that the Super Eagles can reach the final if they sustain the fighting spirit displayed in their last outing and address key areas of concern.
Speaking on 28 December 2025, Mogaji noted that Nigeria showed strong character, intensity, and resilience in their recent match against Tunisia, despite what he described as questionable officiating that worked against the Super Eagles.
According to him, Nigeria were the better side on the day, dominating key phases of the game, but were frustrated by decisions that altered the flow of the contest.
“Nigeria were clearly the better team against Tunisia. Our first goal scored by Victor Osimhen was wrongly disallowed, and an undeserved penalty was awarded against us in the second half. Those decisions made the game unnecessarily difficult for Nigeria towards the end,” Mogaji said.
While commending the team’s overall performance and mental strength, the Kwara Sports Commission boss stressed the need for urgent improvements in defensive organization, noting that the Super Eagles have conceded goals in consecutive matches.
“In two matches now, Nigeria have conceded two goals. I believe this is an area where the team can do much better, especially considering the quality and experience in the squad,” he added.
Mogaji also pointed to goalkeeping as a critical area requiring attention, urging the Super Eagles’ technical crew to work closely with goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali to eliminate avoidable errors.
“The technical crew must caution and guide Nwabali. At this level, small mistakes can be very costly, and goalkeeping errors can change the outcome of big matches,” he advised.
Despite the concerns, Mogaji maintained a positive outlook, emphasizing that Nigeria’s determination, unity, and competitive spirit remain strong assets as the tournament progresses.
“If the team can maintain the spirit we saw in the last game against Tunisia 3-2 and correct these mistakes especially in defence and goalkeeping Nigeria has a very good chance of reaching the final of this competition,” he concluded.
The Super Eagles continue their AFCON 2025 campaign with high expectations from fans and stakeholders, as they push toward reclaiming continental glory in Morocco.
