Transporters cite governor’s achievements, empowerment programmes
Administration will continue to support transport operators, says government
Major transport unions in Kwara State on Thursday unanimously passed a vote of confidence in Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, applauding his administration’s people-centred policies, consistent empowerment programmes, and inclusive leadership.
The unions also endorsed the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Salihu Yakubu Danladi, as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 gubernatorial election.
The endorsement was announced during a stakeholders’ engagement between the state leadership of the APC and transport unions in Ilorin.
The unions represented at the meeting included the Tricycle Owners Association of Nigeria (TOAN), Motorcycle Operators Union of Nigeria (MOUN), National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN).
Speaking on behalf of the transport unions, Chairman of MOUN and Chairman of Irepodun Local Government Area, Alhaji AbdulAzeez Tinuola, praised Governor AbdulRazaq for his unwavering support for transport operators through various empowerment initiatives.
He described the Governor as a leader who has consistently prioritised the welfare of transport workers, recalling that the administration had empowered members on several occasions while creating opportunities for them to contribute meaningfully to governance.
“My emergence as Chairman of Irepodun Local Government is a testament to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s belief in ordinary people. Before politics, I was a transporter. His leadership has given hope to transport workers across the state, and we will continue to support the APC,” Tinuola said.
Chairman of tricycle operators under the NURTW, Lawal Kamaldeen, also commended the Governor for improving the welfare of transport operators and pledged massive support for all APC candidates in the forthcoming elections.
Similarly, Chairman of tricycle operators under RTEAN, Abdullateef Arigbabuwo, attributed the growth of transport businesses in the state to the administration’s investments in road infrastructure, social intervention programmes, and the donation of tricycles to members.
Responding, Senior Adviser and Counsellor to the Governor, Alhaji Sa’adu Salau, thanked the transport unions for their continued confidence in the administration, describing the vote of confidence as a reflection of the government’s positive impact over the past seven years.
He assured them that Governor AbdulRazaq remains committed to improving their welfare and expanding opportunities for transport operators across the state.
Also speaking, APC State Chairman, Prince Sunday Fagbemi, appreciated the unions for their loyalty to the party and reaffirmed that the emergence of Rt. Hon. Salihu Yakubu Danladi as the party’s governorship candidate followed due process.
He urged party members to remain united ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing that the administration would continue to invest in youth empowerment and economic opportunities.
Other dignitaries at the meeting, including the Commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Aliyu Kora Sabi; Chairman of the Niger River Basin Development Authority, Alhaji Abdullateef Gidado Alakawa; Alhaji AbdulRazaq Jiddah; and General Manager of the Kwara State Social Investment Programme (KWASSIP), Dr. Abdulwasiu Tejidini, commended the transport unions for their support and assured them of the government’s continued commitment to strengthening their businesses and livelihoods.
