As the countdown to the 2027 general elections gathers momentum, the race for the Kwara Central Senatorial District is attracting increasing political attention, with Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq set to contest the Senate seat on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The National Assembly election is scheduled by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for January 16, 2027.
AbdulRazaq’s emergence as the APC candidate places his political record, experience and relationship with the people of Kwara Central at the centre of discussions about the contest. Reports from May indicated that he was the only aspirant who purchased the APC nomination and expression-of-interest forms for the Kwara Central senatorial ticket.
As campaigning takes shape, five factors are likely to feature prominently in the political conversation around his bid.
1. Political Experience
AbdulRazaq enters the senatorial contest after years of active participation in Kwara politics, including his tenure as governor since 2019.
His experience in state politics and governance gives him familiarity with the political structures, communities and stakeholders across Kwara Central. His supporters are expected to make this experience a major part of his campaign message as he seeks to transition from the Government House to the National Assembly.
2. Familiarity with Kwara Central
Kwara Central is a political environment AbdulRazaq has contested and operated in for years. He hails from Ilorin West Local Government Area, one of the four local government areas that make up the senatorial district.
The APC candidate is also expected to rely on relationships developed with political stakeholders and grassroots actors across the district.
In April, the APC Ward Chairmen Forum in Kwara Central, representing the district’s 52 wards, publicly called on AbdulRazaq to seek the Senate seat, citing his knowledge of the people and their needs.
3. Record of Governance
Another major component of AbdulRazaq’s campaign is expected to be his administration’s record in office.
Since assuming office in 2019, his administration has highlighted investments in infrastructure, education, healthcare, human capital development and other sectors. His supporters are likely to use projects and programmes implemented across Kwara Central as evidence of what they describe as the administration’s development record.
The election therefore provides AbdulRazaq with an opportunity to take the conversation from his record as governor to what he could seek to accomplish as a senator.
4. APC’s Political Structure
The APC’s existing political structures across Kwara will also be an important feature of the contest.
The party has governed Kwara since 2019 under AbdulRazaq, giving its campaign machinery an established network of party officials, elected representatives and grassroots structures.
The slogan “Iwaju La Nlo” — meaning “We are moving forward” — is already being associated with the party’s 2027 campaign messaging.
However, the strength of any political party ultimately depends on how effectively its structures translate into voter support at the polls.
5. Expectations for Effective Representation
Beyond party politics, the Senate contest is also likely to generate debate about the kind of representation Kwara Central wants at the National Assembly.
AbdulRazaq’s supporters are presenting his executive experience, political network and understanding of government as attributes that could be useful in attracting federal attention and resources to the district.
The argument is that his experience in managing a state could complement legislative representation by giving him familiarity with government processes and intergovernmental relations.
Whether voters ultimately share that assessment will be determined at the polls.
A Contest Shaped by Experience, Record and Expectations
With the 2027 Kwara Central senatorial contest taking shape, AbdulRazaq’s campaign is likely to revolve around three broad themes: his political experience, his record in government and his familiarity with the people and structures of Kwara Central.
The contest will nevertheless involve multiple candidates and competing political platforms, making the electorate’s assessment of the candidates, their records, programmes and capacity central to the eventual outcome.
For AbdulRazaq and the APC, the challenge will be to translate the governor’s record and political network into a compelling case for his transition from the state executive to the Senate.
The people of Kwara Central will ultimately make their choice when they go to the polls on January 16, 2027.
