The Kwara State Sports Commission under the leadership of Coach Bolakale Adisa Mogaji has continued to demonstrate its commitment to grassroots sports development as the Kwara State chapter of the Scrabble Association, in collaboration with African Build Africa, successfully extended its developmental initiative to Tsaragi in Kwara North.
The programme, tagged “Scrabble at the Grassroots,” attracted impressive participation from students and young learners, further expanding the reach of the intellectual sport across the state.
Designed to discover and nurture young talents from the foundation level, the initiative featured intensive practical sessions introducing participants to the rules, techniques, and winning strategies of Scrabble. Students also engaged in interactive learning activities aimed at improving their understanding and appreciation of the game.
As part of the outreach, the team also visited Royal Stars Standard Nursery and Primary School, Gaa Akanbi, where pupils were exposed to the fundamentals of Scrabble in a structured and engaging learning environment.
Organisers disclosed that outstanding students discovered during the programme would be considered for scholarship opportunities up to university level, as part of efforts aimed at sustaining interest and rewarding excellence.
Representatives of the association emphasized the importance of introducing mind sports like Scrabble at an early stage, noting that the game contributes significantly to vocabulary development, critical thinking, concentration, and overall cognitive growth among young learners.
The collaboration between the Scrabble Association and African Build Africa further reflects a shared commitment towards youth empowerment through education and sports development, particularly within underserved communities.
Tsaragi, being one of the prominent towns in Kwara North, was strategically selected to ensure inclusiveness and expand the reach of the sport across the region.
The Kwara State Sports Commission commended the Scrabble Association and its partners for their proactive efforts in taking sports development to the grassroots, describing the initiative as a laudable step towards talent discovery and youth engagement across the state.
The Commission also reiterated its continued support for programmes capable of positively impacting young people and encouraged other sporting associations to emulate such impactful and far-reaching initiatives.
