Kwara State has once again showcased its growing strength in chess development, securing two silver medals at the just-concluded FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Chess Tournament held in Abuja.
The medals were won by Mardhiyyah Abdulsalam, who delivered an impressive performance in the women’s category, finishing as runner-up in both the Rapid and Blitz events.
According to a statement released by the Secretary of the Kwara State Chess Association, Sheu Aliyu, Mardhiyyah scored 12 points from 22 games across the two events and secured the two silver medals following the official tie-break.
The statement noted that the Kwara team faced strong competition from players representing seven countries—Cameroon, India, Kazakhstan, Niger, Nigeria, Ukraine and Zambia—but remained determined and competitive throughout the championship.
In the men’s category, the Kwara State Chess Team finished 6th in the Blitz event and 8th in the Rapid event, recording five points from 11 games in each event.
The tournament was organised by the Nigeria Chess Federation (NCF) in collaboration with the International Chess Federation (FIDE).
Reacting to the achievement, the association’s Secretary said the latest result further demonstrates Kwara State’s growing reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading centres for chess development.
