The Kwara State Chess Association has distributed chess boards and learning materials to selected schools across the state as part of ongoing efforts to promote intellectual sports and nurture young talents at the grassroots level.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Sports Commission, Coach Bolakale Adisa Mogaji, urged beneficiary schools to make effective and responsible use of the materials provided. He emphasized that the initiative aligns with the Commission’s broader commitment to developing mind sports alongside physical sports in the state.
Coach Mogaji also commended the donor, Alhaji Bolaji Nagode, and the Kwara State Chess Association for their sustained dedication to the growth of chess in Kwara State. He further pledged the sum of ₦200,000 to support the organisation of an inter-school chess competition among primary and secondary schools in the state.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Kwara State Chess Association and Executive Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government, Hon. Abdulrasheed Femi Yusuf, described the distribution as the beginning of a new phase in chess development in Kwara State. He noted that the initiative would help expand access to the game and discover young talents early.
Hon. Yusuf further assured that the association would closely monitor activities in the beneficiary schools through regular workshops and competitions aimed at sustaining interest and improving skill levels among students.
He also appreciated Alhaji Bolaji Nagode for his donation of chess materials and pledged that the association would introduce monthly stipends for game masters responsible for training students in the participating schools, as part of efforts to strengthen grassroots development of the game.
